Pup-Approved Trick-or-Treating Tips

Pup-Approved Trick-or-Treating Tips

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year. For our dogs, though, all those costumes, doorbell rings, and candy bowls can be more spooky than sweet. Whether your pup loves to join the fun or prefers a quiet night in, here are some fabdog-approved tips to help them feel safe, happy, and part of the celebration.

1. Set Up a Safe Space for Your Pup

Before the trick-or-treaters even arrive, offer your dog a cozy retreat where they can relax. A quiet room away from the front door works best, with their cozy bed, fresh water, and favorite squeaky toy for comfort. If your pup gets stressed by the sound of knocking or the doorbell, try playing calming music or leaving the TV on in the background. Creating a familiar, cozy space will go a long way in helping them feel secure on Halloween night.

2. Keep the Candy Out of Reach

Those candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags are tempting, but they’re definitely not pup-approved. Chocolate, candy, and even candy wrappers can be dangerous for dogs, so be sure to keep all sweets out of reach. Instead, keep some dog-friendly treats on hand so your pup doesn’t feel left out while everyone else is snacking.

3. Dress Them Up… If They Want To

Costumes can be adorable, but not every dog enjoys wearing them. If your pup isn’t a fan, don’t force it. A simple Halloween bandana or a cozy sweater can still bring plenty of festive spirit. fabdog sweaters are designed to be comfy enough for lounging but stylish enough for quick photo ops or festive outings. Always pay attention to your dog’s comfort and check out pieces from our fall apparel collection that keep them feeling cozy and comfortable.

4. Trick-or-Treating With Your Pup

Thinking about bringing your dog along for the fun? Make sure they’re ready for the excitement. Keep them on a leash, use reflective gear so they stay visible after dark, and stick to quieter streets if your pup is easily overwhelmed. For some dogs, a short stroll to admire the costumes is perfect. For others, skipping the outing altogether is the best choice. The key is knowing what makes your dog most comfortable.

5. Know Your Pup’s Limits

Every dog is different. Some thrive in the middle of the action, while others are happiest curled up in their safe spot. Pay attention to your pup’s body language and don’t be afraid to call it a night early if they seem overwhelmed.

6. Other Ways to Include Your Pup in Halloween Festivities

Not every celebration has to happen on October 31. There are plenty of ways to get your pup in the spirit all month long:

  • Take a fall walk through a pumpkin patch or apple orchard, perfect for festive photos.

  • Plan a doggy playdate with seasonal squeaky toys.

  • Host a backyard “Howl-o-ween” photo shoot with autumn leaves and simple props.

  • Treat your pup to puzzle games or toys to keep them engaged while trick-or-treaters visit.

With a little planning, Halloween night can be fun and safe for the whole family, pups included. Whether your dog is rocking a sweater, enjoying a peaceful night in, or joining you on a fall adventure, the goal is simple: keeping them happy and comfortable.
